A penthouse for your pet
One of the growing trends in new real estate construction is including a suite that’s specifically for pets.
For instance, Standard Pacific Homes, based in Irvine, Calif., is selling homes in communities from Florida to California that include pet suites with features like a wash station, handheld sprayers, easy-to-clean tile walls and floors, storage space specifically for pet toys and equipment, and pet-specific bedding.
Standard Pacific decided to offer pet suites after studying the importance of pets among homebuyers.
"Devotion to pets is second-to-none," Jeffrey Lake, vice president and national director of architecture for Standard Pacific, told the Associated Press. "They are family."
The trend probably won’t go away any time soon. About 70 percent of homebuyers have pets, and the pet industry is worth more than $55 million annually. Homeowners have been remodeling their homes to suit their pets for a long time, so new construction with pet suites is the next logical step.
